Did it work in XP with built-in drivers? If so, see if the built-in XP
drivers will work in Vista. I had an Adaptec 2940 and the XP drivers for
that worked OK in Vista. You have to identify the driver files and the
correct 'inf' file to copy from XP.

It is unclear where you would copy such XP files to under Vista RTM.
What would you guess? \sources?

Try using the appropriate Adaptec drivers for Windows 2003 (not 2000).

Alternatively:

Vista Beta 2 natively recognised my Adaptec card and installed a folder
containing a wide selection of beta drivers from 3rd party manufacturers,
including Adaptec. RC1 and RC2 did neither of those things.

However, the drivers supplied with Beta 2 work perfectly well under RC1 and
RC2. The Adaptec drivers begin with the letters "a320". There is more than
one version because different drivers are used depending on whether or not
RAID is enabled. To reduce effort, simply copy each of them to a separate
folder on a drive that Vista can read during its installation process (eg, a
floppy). When prompted where to install Vista, you can choose to install
drivers. Once you have picked the right version, your SCSI drives will appear.

Adaptec returned an e-mail to my inquiry regarding drivers.

Their position is that they do not support operating systems before they are
officially released. It is unclear to me what the "official" release date is,
but truth be told, I don't believe they are developing the drivers. Microsoft
is more likely going to be responsible for delivering them.

I am curious as to how you arrive at your assumption that
Microsoft would be responsible for delivering the software
drivers for Adaptec's hardware? I think it would be an
historic first if they did since I have never heard of
Microsoft doing any such thing in the past.
