Can't update roaming profile (in use)

Hi,

I am not a sysadmin by any stretch of the imagination, but
it has become my duty to administer a family member's Win
XP SP-1 home computer.

When logging out, the computer in question gives logs the
following two errors into the application log:
Date: 25/07/2004 Source: Userenv
Time: 3:27:31 PM Category: NONE
Type: Error EventID: 1509
User: COMP\Adam
Computer: COMP
Description: Windows cannot copy file
D:\Documents\Adam\ntuser.tmp to location
D:\Documents\Adam\NTUSER.DAT. Possible causes of this
error include network problems or insufficient security
rights, etc.
DETAIL: The process cannot access the file because it is
being used by another process.

Date: 25/07/2004 Source: Userenv
Time: 3:27:32 PM Category: NONE
Type: Error Event ID: 1504
User: COMP\Adam
Computer: COMP
Description: Windows cannot update your roaming profile.
Possible causes of this error include network problems or
insufficient security rights, etc...
DETAIL: The process cannot access the file because it is
being used by another process.

My questions are (for now):
* Why would the computer need a roaming profile? There is
only one computer in the house.
* How could I convert roaming prociles to local profiles?
* How can I find out which process is using the file in
question?

Thanks for any help you can provide, even if it's just
pointer to knowledge-base articles that my meagre search
skills couldn't find. Searching on the error description
the only one I found was KB826379, but the link to
http://www.netapp.com/ didn't seem relevant.

You wouldnt, you will end up with 2 copies of the same data. pointless.
* How could I convert roaming prociles to local profiles?
You can right click 'my computer' and go to properties. click the 'advanced
tab' and then click 'user profiles'. This will list all the profiles on the
machine and tell you whether they are local or roaming. there is also a
button that lets you change the type.
* How can I find out which process is using the file in

I find Process Explorer form sysinternals an invaluable tool for such
things. http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml
if you load this, then click on 'find' -> 'find handle', and serach for
'ntuser', you will get a list of the processes that are using the file, i
suspect is will just be 'system', but you might find it is something else.

Thought so.

Thanks, I'll try this out in a few days when I go over
there again and report back if it is(n't) successful. I'm
fairly confident it'll make the current error messages go
away, but hopefully it doesn't introduce any new ones.

Thanks,
Adam
