when trying to logon to xp professional, it just beeps
when trying to type password or user name.

Does the CTRL ALT DEL Function work? Is your Mouse working? If your Mouse is working, shutdown your PC from the Login menu. Then remove and reseat your Keyboard plug and power up and try again. If you remove your Keyboard plug and put it back while the PC is on, you may fuse the motherboard and stop your PC working.

CTRL ALT DEL brings up the "unlock screen" but when typing
the password in it just beeps. Can't get to the login
options from there. Mouse is fine.

OK. Well failing that, you'll have to power off your PC and remove the keyboard lead and inspect the pins in the plug then reseat the lead firmly and power on. PC will probably check the disks but thats OK. Now try it, log in, if thats OK then Lock the PC and then try unlocking it......
