cant type in boxes HELP!

ok i know this sounds stupid but i recently installed
windows xp professional and i have this problem where i
cant type into certain boxes..an example is when i go to
use paint and i try to type in the boxes to change the
pixel size of the image. it allows me to hi-light and
delete but it wont let me type. this also happens in
other programs where i have to type in boxes like that.
and it even happens on certain internet sites where i
have to log in. if any 1 has any clue what could be wrong
or what i can do please help me im so annoyed right now

For things like paint I can't help you.

But for internet sites I might have a clue.
I raised many of my Internet Explorer security settings
after a flood of attacks from the outside. Some things
I just disabled, many I set to "Prompt." Then I found
that I could not type text into the search boxes on the
Microsoft web site! It is completely repeatable, with
the security up I cannot give it a string to search for.
I get lots of prompts to accept or reject but I can't
type text.

Now I'm not saying that this is the answer to your problem,
but you might think about whether this could apply in your
case.

Similar item, after SP2 deleted my Sun Hotspot Java compiler
installation I went to the www.java.com and tried to sign
up for their subscription, so I can run the software that
I've written here. The "subscribe" button wasn't there.
I had to go find another working machine to get the button
so I could order the replacement. Just gotta love this SP2.

For the paint issue, it's not something as simple as having
num lock switched off is it?
