Can't Switch user on XP anymore

R

Ray

Hey guys,

Been having a ton of XP problems lately. I'll mention
them, any help appreciated. Trying to avoid a REINSTALL of
XP !

1. When attempting to SWITCH USER in XP, Nothing happens
anymore. I go to control panel,user accounts...when I try
to click on "Change way user logs off/on" I get a
suspicious script from Mcafee names MSHTA.exe. Won't allow
me to change anything.

2. My fonts changed all by themselves. Still trying to
figure that one out.

3. I lost all audio on the internet except for my internal
speaker, which I just get occasional beeps from. But if I
run an MP3, audio is just fine. Just no audio on web sites.

All this happened in the same night. Thought it was a
VIRUS. Suscribed to McAfee, have a firewall and virus scan
set up, nothing detected. BUT now everytime I boot
up...type in my password at log in screen and hit
enter...I GET ABOUT 4 MCAFEE WARNINGS that a VIRUS has
been detected. I run a scan with current updates, still
get those 4 beep/warnings EVERY SINGLE BOOT UP.

I ran SPYBOT, detected about 15 critical, fixed them all.

Still get 4 Beep/Warnings

SIGH....any help appreciated!

Boot the computer into Safe Mode (See Help and Support). Also you may want to turn off Script blocking in McAfee, temporarily. MSHTA.EXE is the executable for HTA (HyperText Application) files. And Windows does use a number of HTA files, which can include Java or Visual Basic Script code.

Once in Safe Mode, rescan your system. Make sure you AV software is up to date with the latest defitions. You should be able to check the other issues in Device Manager and the User Accounts applet, without your AV software trying to interfere, since it should only run when you load it manually.
