Can't stop network shares from appearing in Network Places

I've used the Group Policy setting to keep shares from being added to My
Network Places, but all active shares on my network still appear every time I
open an Explorer window. I've also set the "NoRecentDocsNetHood" key in the
registry manually, with no effect. I can't delete them manually, because
they aren't shortcuts (at least not in Explorer--it shows the actual
folders.) There has to be a way to stop them (???) OS is Win XP Pro (SP1 or
SP2, no difference).

Gary,

at least they normally disappear on their own after a few weeks,
if the shares are no longer present on the network. Perhaps this
is some consolation?

I think you can actually delete them. They are, in fact,
something like shortcuts. I have done it. If you don't trust me,
pull the Ethernet cable from your computer, then delete them,
but that shouldn't be necessary.

Why they appear in spite of your registry settings, I don't
know, sorry.

You're right, they can be deleted, even though they don't look like normal
shortcuts. I finally tried it, and what gets deleted is some kind of Windows
file that must contain a shortcut, even though it shows up as a network
folder in Explorer itself. And I finally found one more setting in Explorer
Folder Settings called "Automatically search for network folders and
printers" that I can turn off, which seems to have stopped them from
re-appearing. So maybe third try is the charm. Thanks very much for the
reply.

Gary,

you're welcome, and thanks for reporting back.
