Can't start Win Defender Service

I downloaded and installed the Windows Defender software, but when i tried to
start it I got a message that I did not have permission to start the Defender
Service. I have WinXP on a brand new Lenovo with a single user with
Administrator privileges.

Thanks
Roger

Along the lines of DaveM's thought, have you been to Windows Update and done
an express scan, and applied all updates shown? Do that until no more
updates are available.
(and, if you have Office on this machine, by all means choose Microsoft
update, and scan the same way)

I have not verified SP2, but I assume that is what a brand new Levova would
come with. Yes I have run all of the available Windows Updates (all 62 of
them)!

62 - WoW. Sounds like that system has never been updated before. I would
also try re-running the updates again in that case, and again if necessary
until no more Express downloads are offered. There are some dependencies
in there which may not come down in one attempt at it.

Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > General tab
will show you what operating system your running, which is probably XP
Service Pack 2 since it's a new system... but to be sure you can try
clicking through that route. Defender will not run without Service Pack 2
or higher.

This is a brand new machine, and you have applied all offered critical
updates, and also gone back again to see whether more are available?

What other software besides XP is installed? Particularly--"protective"
software? Include anything which lenovo packs that might be
relevant--goback?

This seems like either oddly set permissions of some sort, or something
intentionally interfering with starting new processes--some anti-malware
might do that.

I've seen the Defender process killed by a root kit in place on the machine,
and a virus could certainly do the same, but I wouldn't expect the error
message you are getting from that.

Can you say whether this is XP Pro or XP Home?

I haven't deserted you, but I also don't have any useful thoughts to offer.
Your's is my only unread message in this group, and I leave it out there so
that I'll think about it each time I look at the groups, but I haven't had
any brain waves yet.

Uninstalling and reinstalling would seem a reasonable course to try, but
maybe you've done that already?

I suppose we could go for more diagnostic information--Presumably, each time
you start the machine and this service fails to start, it is logged in the
system event log.

Any chance you could cut and paste the detail of that log entry for us?

Right-click My Computer, choose Manage. Look for Event Viewer in the left
column and click the PLUS to expand the list of event logs. Click on the
System event log. In the right column, scroll down to the time of the last
startup, and look above that for the error. When you find it double click
on it to open it, then click on the icon that pastes it to the
clipboard--third down on the upper right.

Then compose a reply to this thread, and right-click and choose paste to
insert the log information into your text.
