Can't specify data type during import - Access 2003

I'm importing an Excel spreadsheet as a new table in my database. The Import
Spreadsheet Wizard does not allow me to choose the number data type. Instead
it assigns the data types and keeps the 'Data Type' box greyed out so that I
can't choose the number data type I need from the drop-down list.

For instance, for a field that clearly contains only small integer values,
it chooses Double. For fields where I would choose Single, again it forces
the Double data type though there is definitely no need for it (I know the
dataset quite well).

I would prefer to set the proper data types as I'm importing rather than
change them in the table design view later. How do I do this?

Thanks,
Pat

You cannot do this with ACCESS 2003 version or with earlier versions. You
can do it with ACCESS 2007 version.

Pat - I have had that problem too. Is it possible that you have some blank
fields in your spreadsheet in the first record? I found that if I populate
the first record in the spreadsheet with the proper data (could be a dummy
record - just hide the row), access will assign the correct data type to the
field when you run the import wizard.

Another way may be to create your table with data type fields, then import
the spreadsheet into an existing table rather than creating a new one...

Hope this helps...
