can't silence sounds

Hello:
I can't find another newsgroup to post this to, so hope the right
person/people see this and can help. I don't want any sound event to happen
when I'm using my laptop, and even though I have the "no sounds" option
clicked in the appropriate Control Panel box, I still get a sound when some
events happen -- the sound is of a big drop of water hitting surface water. I
know I can mute the speakers, but I often work while listening to an external
sound source (radio via the Internet). I have carefull (I think) checked and
re-checked my settings, but I still get sound. Can anyone help?
Thanks,
Bill

Bill,

The water droplet sound is most likely generated by a third-party software
running in the system. See this note from Don Varnau.

Are you running PestPatrol? PestPatrol makes this sound when it allows (I
believe) a cookie. You may be able to turn it off from PestPatrol prefs or
settings. Or, one tenacious user renamed this file [C:\Program
Files\PestPatrol\CookieCrunch.wav] so that PestPatrol couldn't use it.

Hello Ramesh:
Thanks! and thanks also to Don Varnau: I DO run Pest Patrol; I clicked on
their taskbar icon and found the Disable/enable Sound button, and it seems to
have silenced their annoying digital version of the ancient water torture.

Thanks again for your good service,

Bill
