Can't Shutdown

When I click on "Start" then "Turn off Computer" my mouse curser
changes to an hour glass and my computer locks up. The only way I can
turn it off is to turn off the power bar. Was working fine for months
and this just started happening. Have not installed any new programs.
Does anybody have any suggestions how to get the computer back to
shutting down the normal way. Thanks in advance for all replies.
