Can't shut down after XP update

I updated my laptop to Service Pak 2 a few days ago and everything was
working fine until last night, when I tried to shut down instead of just
hibernating (as I usually do). The computer won't shut down - I get to the
blue "shut down" screen and then I get a message saying

"Do not turn off or unplug your computer; it will turn off automatically."

This flips to another message that says

"Updates are being installed (1 of 3)."

But the cycle never ends - the only way out is to pull the plug and battery
and reboot. Any solutions?

Run the Windows Update manually from the MS website. There's some
update that's stalling (waiting for the user to accept a EULA? :)) the
shutdown, and the manual update fixed the problem for me.

Power cycle the computer. When you log back in, hit WindowsUpdate and
install the updates manually. I'm guessing it's that stupid GDI+ update
that's sitting around waiting for you to see the information it's
displaying. Bummer that it forgot that it locked you out of the console...
