Bob

I have two PCs running XP Home. I reinstalled XP Home on one PC and now I
can no longer access the "Program Files" folder from the other PC. Neither
PC let's me access that folder on the other PC. It says I do not have permission
or rights, something to that effect.

I set read and write rights on the C drive for each PC and I can read and
write in any folder on either PC from the other PC, except for that one folder.

Can anyone offer any suggestions on what to do. Thanking you in advance.

Hi Bob,

From the Windows XP Help and Support

" The Sharing option is not available for the Documents and Settings,
Program Files, and WINDOWS system folders. In addition, you cannot share
folders in other user's profiles. "

Search keyword : "To share a drive or folder on the network"

-or-
Start/Run and type:
ms-its:C:\WINDOWS\Help\filefold.chm::/windows_share_your_folders.htm

Sure you can share Program Files, etc. I do it all the time.

First, you have to go to Tools\Folder Options, click the View tab,
scroll to the bottom of the list and un-check "Use simple file
sharing".

Next, go to "My Computer", right-click on the C: drive, select
"sharing and security", click the "New Share" button and share the
drive.

After that, go to the "Security" tab, pick the group "Everyone" (or
group/user of your choice), select the permissions below that you wish
(e.g. "Full Control"), THEN click the "Advanced" button. Once again,
select the group/user you choose and near the bottom of that window
check the box next to the lengthy sentence "Replace permission entries
on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child
objects" and click "OK".

You will be presented with a warning that states something like "This
will remove explicitly defined permissions....Mr. Gates does not wish
you to be able to use your computer in any manner that you may deem
useful!" (sorry, couldn't resist!). Click an emphatic "YES" and wait
a few minutes while permissions propogate throughout the entire drive.

When the security settings are done with all the dirs and files, you
can access ANY DIRECTORY AND FILE YOU WISH!!

I'd think an MVP would know this and offer the correct advice. I was
under the impression that it couldn't be done, but some poking around
made it possible. Please, MS personnel, if something CAN be done,
DON'T SAY IT CAN'T!

Thank you, goodnight!
