can't setup network

i have time warner's road runner and a linksys wrt54g router. I have
no trouble accessing the internet with my original computer, but i have
added a second computer in an effort to create a network. I can't see
one computer from the other, or access the internet from the new
computer. Also, i can't ping the gateway from the new computer, but
can ping the network adapter and the new computer's ip address. please
help. i've tried just about everyhting. i can't even connect the two
computers using a patch cable. the original computer is running xp pro
and the new computer is running xp home. feel free to email me.

Your problems all point to some firewall blocking ICMP packets. You need to
be sure that there is only one firewall the problem computer and that the
firewall is properly configured to permit file and printer sharing.

It would help to know what the results from ipconfig/all are.

Both of my computers report the node type as "Hybrid". I don't know that
the node type makes a difference, but you should check that out.

The next item is whether your firewall is passing ICMP packets or not. I
use ZA, and I had to hunt to find where to enable file and printer sharing.

Nearly all the time, the reason for not being able to share files and
printers (assuming that you have set up the shares correctly) is that some
firewall is blocking ICMP.
As Chuck has mentioned numerous times, this blocking can be caused by
improper setup of a firewall or overlooking of multiple firewalls. I had
this last problem once.

A simple test is to use the ping command. It sends and receives ICMP
packets (of the appropriate type). So, if you can't ping, you won't be able
to share files and printers either.

The ping command is valid, when the network stack is otherwise clean. If
alternate protocols are present, the ping command isn't as accurate.

A cluttered network stack can be diagnosed with a combination of "ipconfig /all"
and "browstat status". It won't affect ping results, but it will screw up file
sharing, in various ways.

But you're right, the number one problem discussed in this forum is
misconfigured and overlooked firewalls and other security components.
