Can't Set-up New Internet Connection using Broadband

T

Tippy

I recently upgraded some of my hardware
(motherboard/processor & video card)changing from Intel P
III to AMD 2.8 Mhz. I am running XP Professional and I
did a system repair to register all of the changes.

Everything works OK except I can't get on the internet.
When I tried to set up a new Internet Conection [for
ADSL], I can get as far as "How do you want to connect to
the internet" but the options of [1] Connect using a dial
up modem OR [2] Connect using a broadband connection
that requires a user name and password are both
greyed out and are unusable. It is option [2] that I am
after.

My IP provider said there is a known Microsoft solution
for this problem - Can anyone help or point me in the
right direction ? (as I don't want to do a full re-
install again)

Hi Tippy -

This is something to try. First make sure your modem is installed properly.
Then open up Internet Explorer (of course you won't be able to connect) but
go to the Tools menu--click on internet options--click on the Connections
tab and select the option to Never dial a connection and click ok. Re-run
the wizard and let's see what happens.

Post back and let us know.

You ran a Repair Install from an XP Pro cdrom that did not include
Service Pack 1 and the previous installation of XP did include SP1.
When you did that, you removed SP1 and all XP Critical Updates
including the one that deals with the RPC vulnerability exploited by the
MSBLASTER worm and its variants. Before you connect to
the Internet, make sure you are behind a router with a firewall
or have a functioning third-party firewall or have the XP ICF
enabled. Then you will need to immediately go to the Windows
Update site and get all Service Packs (SP1A) and critical updates
installed. SP1A will need to be installed separately and be sure
to reboot before going back for the rest of the critical updates.
