Can't set-up fax service in WinXP

I have installed an external faxmodem (USR 5633) which is showing as working
fine in Device Manager.

When I try to set-up the fax service some files are required from the XP SP2
CD. I can see the files exist on the CD and location specified in the
drop-down in the same dialog box is correct (F:\i386), except that the last
letter of the extension is replaced with an underscore (_).

Since this is the WinXP CD that was used to install the OS in th first
place, how come windows doesn't know how to access these files?

before you start your system, put the cd in your cd slot and just after
the xp logo appears make sure you hold down the shift key..so the cd
won't boot automatically. Then go to control panel/add/remove and then
add conponents. When the wizard appears click the box for Fax service
and then remove your hold shift key..the program is installed
instantly. Then close wizard. To verify that you have the program go to
start/all programs/assessories/communications/fax/fax console should
appear.

I didn't know that holding down the Shift key overrides booting from the
CDROM, but I have the boot sequence set to boot from IDE0 first so it won't
boot to the CDROM anyway.

I'm not quite sure what you're saying regarding holding the Shift key. It
sound like you're suggesting that I keep it pressed until I've selected to
install the Fax service, but holding down the Shift key prevents me from
selecting Add/Remove from the Control Panel.

Is that what you're suggesting?

If so, what's the difference between doing this and selecting this the
normal way?

Hi Hal.

Thanks for this. I have now extracted all the files on my WinXP CD/I386
folder to F:\I386 (the default path shown in the previous error dialog).
The wizard completed fine and there's now a Fax icon in the printers group,
but the wizard didn't take me through any set-up procedure as I was
expecting and double clicking the Fax icon brings up a typically unhelpful
error message saying 'Operation could not be completed. Either the printer
name was typed incorrectly, or the specified printer has lost its connection
to the server. For more information click help.' Not surprisingly,
clicking help just brings up a generic printers troubleshooter that's also
of no help.

I'm stumped. Any further suggestions?
