Can't Set IE HomePage

J

JCO

The area is grayed out, therefore, I can't change my homepage default. It
is set to msn.com. What can do this. Ran all Trojan and Virus Tools. I
was able to set it okay when logged in as Administrator, but not as the
User. Also, User has Administrator rights.

Hi JCO,
First of all do you run these softwares on your computer:
= Zone Alarm = Spybot S&D in Tea Timer Mode = Spy Shierf = WeatherBug
= AdAware.... etc.
If yes, then proceed,You can do the changes in safe Mode, start in Safe Mode
and change the HomePage then reboot and see if your changes take effect.

If no joy try this:
Open the RUN command and type : msconfig click oK
On the Window click on the Start Up Programs Tab and uncheck the
pre-mentioned programs from starting up.
Then Reboot and see if you could change your Homepage.
If no joy then do the following:

Change the Home page in the following KEYS:
Click on *Main*
[+]HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main.

and look in Right Pane/Window and Locate *Start Page* Right
Click on it and select Modify and enter the Data say for ex;
http://www.MyWb.com as your Home page and then Locate also this *Local
Page* and Right Click on it and select Modify and put the following;
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\blank.htm

The same with this KEY:
[+] HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
On the *Start Page* change it into http://www.mywb.com

Leave the *Local Page* as it is if it have this stringe of Data:
http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd={SUB_PRD}...... etc

Close the Registry and Open the IE Properties by Right Click on the Icon on
your Desktop and select Properties from the drop down list.
On the IE window click on Programs Tab and click on Manage Add-Ons, in the
Add-Ons window Disable Add-Ons for Non-MS IE Add-Ons (ZA, Safer network..etc)
and click OK.
On the same window click *Reset web Settings* and click Apply/OK and Reboot
your computer and see if the new home page is set.

If you still can't change the homepage then you need to uninstall the
Culprit software which blocking you from changing the Address like (ZA, S&D,
AD-Aware...etc), and remove their left behind traces on the System by using
the Local Search engine on the start button and also in the Registry, but be
carefull in the registry not to delete a system file if you in doubt leave it.
After finishing Restart your Machine and see if the issue cured, if all Okay
reinstall your software and configure them to protect your Machine and let
you have control on your computer.

First of all, I had to do a restore from an Image which was 1 year old.
This is on my daughters computer.
When I saw WeatherBug, ZoneAlarm & Adware installed, I uninstalled them.

Spybot 1.4 is installed and gets everything that it could find out.
Symantec NSW found the following items listed below:

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\bridge.inf
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\SAHAgent_.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\SahHtml_.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\SAHUninstall_.exe

With my system set up to show all files and system files, these items do not
exist. I discovered this after my original email.

I could not get any of your suggestions to work except for the last idea. I
did not have a Start Page listed. Therefore, I created key and added the
string value. This works as a work around. The area is still Grayed out
but at least my daughters home page is working.

I'm installing Spysweeper to see if it can help get rid of the files (listed
above) that I can't find.

That was it. WOW, as much as I've used SpyBot, I've never seen that option.
This takes care of my Grayed out Option, which was my main concerned
(because I thought it was being hijacked).

My only concern now is to get rid of those files that Symantec Anti Virus
High Risk Files that I can't find. Any clue on that would be helpful.

Does Symantec Anti Virus have a virus vault or similar where it parks
infected files instead of deleting them? Look in Symantec Anti Virus Help.

Yes it does, but I've cleaned everything out. SpySweeper found all sorts of
stuff and now I'm re-running Symantec Anti-Virus to see if it helped. I
will let you know.

It seems that SpySweeper took care of the problem. I had to run it 3-4
times to make sure everything was cleaned out. Thanks everybody for the
