Can't Send/Receive - Sometimes

Sometimes when I click send/receive nothing happens. I
then close Outlook (2003) and go to Task Manager. Outlook,
of course, is no longer running as an application, but it
is running as a process. Sometimes I find multiple
instances of the process running. When I shut down the
process & restart the application, I can send/receive. I'm
also running Zone Alarm virus protection which has made
some changes to Outlook. Has anyone else seen this?
