I just got a new system and it has windows vista on it. I use Earthlink and
it is not compatible with the Earthlink mail server so it uses windows mail.
I can receive mail with no problems when I try to send I get the following
error

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Subject 'Candle In The Wind', Account: '(My email address) Mail
Account', Server: 'smtpauth.earthlink.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 587,

2 possibilities that I can think of

(1) Your Anti Virus is set to scan incoming and outgoing emails
(2) SMTP port number or SMTP address is wrong

587 is right.

Disabling the AV is unlikely to be enough for Norton or McAfee
both of while need to be uninstalled completely, pierced through
the heart with a wooden stake, shot with a silver bullet
and buried in a garlic coffin.

Avast - http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html is fine
but that too should have email scanning disabled.

ROTFL! I especially like the garlic coffin.

I just double checked the POP & SMTP settings, they are correct. I also
disabled the nortons outgoing mail. I am still having the issue. Have any
other ideas I can try?

Just disabling Norton is not sufficient. You will need to uninstall it
completely.
