cant send emails

I can not send emails with windows mail.
Started about a week ago. Spent 5 hours on live help with my ISP, the phone
and even let them take over my computer for two hours. They gave up and told
me to contact Microsoft. I have read all these threads and we did all those
things. I do not agree with the advice of removing your anti-virus in this
day and age but we did so. My error message is as follows.

The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was '(e-mail address removed)'. Subject
'Re: [Electroplating 101] Re: Tanks ! Hope this Helps,', Account:

Response: '550 From: address is not valid. Please check your email
settings.', Port: 587, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number:

I need to send emails and I am very dissapointed in Vista. I am seriosly
considering a MAC. Can I get help here? Is there a number I can call? By the
way I even get this message when I try to send a message to my self. Thanks.

The email was rejected by the server, apparently because the From field does
not contain an address it recognizes; perhaps not an EarthLink address.
This is not a Windows Mail problem.

Not to doubt your word Mr. Saunders. I am not a computer expert but
neither am I computer illiterate. I turned my computer over to the experts
and watched as at least 5 different ones tried all that they knew (learned a
little my self watching) to no avail. We even tried creating a new ISP
account. I see from the posts that I am not alone in this problem and have
seen very few if any successes in fixing it. What I do not understand, other
than marketing strategies, is why Vista is not reverse compatible, why it is
not compatible with the antiviruses bundled with it and why it was released
with so many problems.
In short I need help. It is not an ISP problem. If it is then I will
offer an apology. Can I get support? Where? Thank you for your quick reply.

The main reason that things are not "reverse compatible" is to maintain the
integrity of the system which even Window XP with SP2 applied had a
difficult time with. Programs that mucked around in the innards are locked
out. Prime examples are:
QuickBooks prior to QB 2006
Norton and McAfee Anti-virus programs. Gee, one can even uninstall them
without hours of registry tweaking! If you have either of these, temporarily
disable them and see if Windows Mail works. If it does, download either the
free AVG Anti-virus http://free.grisoft.com or AVAST http://www.avast.com/
Troubles will vanish.

Microsoft did not bundle Anti-virus programs with Vista. The computer
manufacturer did!

Were these experts familiar with Vista? Were they with EarthLink?

Can you check your email on the webmail site? This would check your
username/password.
https://webmail.earthlink.net/wam/login.jsp?redirect=/wam/index.jsp&x=-124432628

The instructions (for OE 6) indicate that the outgoing server requires
authentication, is that checked?

I understand you removed your antivirus. Was this removal accomplished
as a regular uninstall? Did the uninstall routine conclude with a message
saying the program was successfully uninstalled? The reason I harp on this
is because both McAfee and Symantec Norton found it necessary to
provide special removal utilities on their website, because their programs
are so difficult to uninstall successfully.
Did you replace the antivirus with anything? Are you using any other third
party security software such as anti-spyware or firewall?

I take it that you and EarthLink decided that the error message
from EarthLink's server ("From: address is not valid") is bogus.

As I said. We removed all the antivirus software. Total uninstall. Currently
using AVG which has been my antivirus of choice for a few years. Thanks for
the help. Elrod.

They were rathlinks support team. They were very well versed in earthlink and
from what I saw them doing they seemed versed in Vista as well. Don't know
where they were but they took over my computer remotely. Yes I can send and
recieve just fine on earthlinks web mail. However it has limited storage and
I use my emails for buisiness. I have been using G-mail in the interim.

One tends to get a distorted view of reality by reading this forum,
which is mainly used by unhappy campers. For every user who
has problems with email, there are probably one million who have
no such problem, but they don't post here.

Most email problems are self-inflicted.

It might be self inflicted but I wasn't the one who installed Norton on my
computer- It was HP. Shouldn't they have known something was wrong only 1
month ago. I uninstalled it & reinstalled McAfee which was a free program
offered by Comcast which was just as bad. Comcast still doesn't know (or
plays dumb) the McAfee problem. In the mean time I still don't have any mail
on my notebook so I guess I'll just have to wait until the sort it all out.
btw- My neighbor has Vista on his notebook & I temporally set up my email
account on his Vista mail & it worked fine- I don't know what virus
protection he's using.

Since you had Norton and McAfee on the machine, remove the EarthLink
account, restart WinMail and re-enter the account information.

Ok I went to Symantecs site and followed thier instuctions. Nothing to remove
and the mail still does not work. I have many emails comming in and it is a
pain to read them in windows and then go to gmail to send answers.
Again I will ask. Is there somewhere online I can go or someone I can call
for microsoft support? Elrod.

This is the only online support (volunteers). You can call MS, but they
won't talk to you unless you pay a hefty fee first.
Then there is always your local Geek Squad or equivalent.

Your best bet at this point is to try an upgrade to Windows Live Mail:

Yes the uninstall ended succcessfully. I will later today go to Nortons site

reconfigured all my earthlink data numerous times. We not only uninstalled
all third party security software but dis-abled windows security as well. As
I said this was at least a 5 hour session and every one worked hard. Thanks.

Subject

I never had Earthlink. I entered information for my Comcast account from day

So Mr. Gates sells a defective product that every one is forced to buy if
they want a new computer, unless you buy a Mac, and offers no support unless
you want to pay him more. As I said before. Marketing! The "Geek Squads" are
even having trouble with this one. I thought the government was picking on
poor old Bill but I guess for once they knew what they were doing! I've got a
new, pretty much top of the line computer that is under warranty so I guess
they will have to replace it. Thank you for the responses to give to them to
justify replacement. Maybe I can get a new one every 6 weeks or so. Thanks
again. Elrod.

Suit yourself, but returning a computer and exchanging it sounds like
a lot more trouble than trying a different email program.

I intend to try the other email. Thing is we small people are at the mercy of
big business. As you stated if I wanted to pay for extra support they would
fix it for me. Kinda like buying a car the paying for the keys seperate. If
enough little people took the product back then the big businesses would
start looking for a fix because it would start cutting into their profit
margin. The bottom line would be affected. Again I sincerely thank you for
your help. You take the time out of your life to volunteer on this forum. If
not for you or people like you there would be no free microsoft support. It
is not you. I believe you to be pure of heart. Microsoft however needs to
step back and taske a better look at it's self. Elrod.
