can't send email - Error #0x800CCC0F

New computer Feb.07. Norton 360 installed Apr.07. All worked just fine with
Windows Mail until a few days ago, then suddenly I could not send email, but
could still receive it. I learned that Earthlink had made changes in their
outgoing mail server to help fight spam. I made the required changes (smtp
to smtpauth, and Port 25 to 587) in my email settings, but still could not
send emails. "Server requires Authentication" is checked. I disabled
Norton's email scanning. I deleted the emails in my Outbox and created a new
test message to myself, but it still would not send. I turned the computer
off and let it rest. Nothing has helped. The error message reads: Your
server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this
include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity.
Subject 'test message', Account: [my correct email address] Mail Account',
Server: 'smtpauth.earthlink.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port 587, Secure(SSL):
Yes, Error Number 0x800CCC0F. Can anyone help? I am not very computer
literate.

Hello, I have the same error message come up when I try to send any large
attachments. This error message terminates my connection. It seems that Vista
doesn't work very well with dialup. I use Earthlink also. I can receive the
message I am trying to forward, but it will not go. Can someone help me? I
have had the same error since buying my computer in July of 07. Barbara

Regardless of the error, the connection should not terminate.
Go to Tools, Options, Connection, make sure that "Hang up
after sending and receiving" is not checked.

Why was Norton compatible with Windows Mail until just a few days ago? I
don't get it! What has changed? Do I need to cancel my Earthlink and find a
new Internet Service Provider?

After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download

Even compatible antivirus programs will need to have their

There is no need to change to a different ISP.

Just like an illness, there can be a long incubation period before
symptoms become apparent.

My windows mail has suddenly stopped working tonight as well. I was trying to
get help from the online chat service offered through HP techs which was no
help at all. Three hours later I still cannot get my email to work. Here is
the error message I receive:

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'pop-server.nyc.rr.com',
Server: 'pop-server.nyc.rr.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No,
Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

I was and still am also having issues/error message with my windows not be
able to search for updates and now tonight my email no longer works. Vista is
truly a disgrace. I tried changing my settings on my virus protection
programs not to scan emails and I also even tried to to a "system restore" to
an earlier date, but of course, wouldn't you know it, I even got an error
message saying it couldn't do a system restore! :( Any help anyone can offer
would be greatly appreciated.

Gary, the hang up after sending & receiving is not checked. I can send small
written e-mails or forward small e-mails, but when I try to send a large file
attachment forward the mail will try to go and then a windows mail window
will come up and say your internet provider has not responded in 60 sec.
would you like to wait. I say yes and in 60 sec. my internet connection is
not connected. I loose the connection. This happens every time I try to send
something big. It is a windows mail problem. Probably somewhere in the
options. I've checked everything, but some of the options are hard to
understand. There are too many.

It is also not due to my anti virus. I have Kaspersky and I've turned it
off and the forward will still not go. I received the forward but cannot
forward it on. I hate this mail program...Barbara

It may be a limit set by your internet provider. You could ask them if
they have a limit, and if so, what it is.

Although we have not had bad reports about Kaspersky before,
you could uninstall it to see if that makes a difference.
Sometimes the 'disable' feature still leaves enough of the AV
active that it interferes with Windows Mail.

Any other third party security programs like anti-spyware?

First, install this update and empty the Outbox.
Messages may be stuck in the Outbox when you use Windows Mail on a computer
that is running Windows Vista
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941090
It also works on other folders.

Then uninstall Norton.
Then run this program to finish uninstalling Norton:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
Then delete the account in WinMail and close WinMail.
Reopen WinMail and re-enter the account.
Now try to send.

Thanks for trying, Mr. Saunders. I finally hired a tech person; he came to
my house today, did everything you said to do, but I still can't send email.
He researched the error message; he thinks the issue is with a recent update
to Windows Vista and its resultant interface with Earthlink's outgoing
server. It is unfixable at present. So I am $105 poorer and haven't got a
darned thing to show for it. Bah. But thank you for trying to help - I do
appreciate it.

At least the tech was knowledgeable enough to uninstall Norton 360.
However, for $105 in charges he should not have left you with a
non-working email program. The least he could have done is to
get you fixed up with a copy of the new Windows Live Mail.

As for a big fix coming out for Vista early next year, yes, it's
called Service Pack 1 (SP1), but from a consumer viewpoint
I would not get my hopes up that it will fix anything you are
concerned about. The previews that have been published say
it will primarily benefit corporations.

Subject 'test message', Account: [my correct email address] Mail Account',
Server: 'smtpauth.earthlink.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port 587, Secure(SSL):
Yes, Error Number 0x800CCC0F. Can anyone help? I am not very computer
literate.

Gary - the tech was here for two hours but only charged me for 1 1/2 hrs. He
advised me to use Earthlink's Webmail (which I had already found on my own; I
had sent a test message to myself to verify that it works). He promised to
see if something called Thunderbird would work with Vista, and to come set it
up for me if it will work. I have been unable to move my Contacts list from
Windows Mail to Earthlink's Webmail (the instructions are beyond my limited
capabilities), so using Webmail is somewhat clumsy. The tech said he'd stop
by tomorrow and move the Contacts list for me. I also fed him lunch while he
was here (homemade bean soup), so maybe that helped. Thanks for your help -
you've made this mess much more bearable than it would otherwise have been.
But I am still pissed at Microsoft and Vista and Earthlink and Norton.

Thank you for trying to help me, Mr. VanderMolen. The tech person who came
to my home today did uninstall my Norton 360. He installed something called
AVG. He did lots of other things, but I still can't send email. He thinks
the issue is a recent Microsoft update for Vista, along with its interface
with Earthlink's outgoing mail server. Supposedly a big fix for a multitude
of Vista problems will be coming out early next year. Thanks again for
trying to help a little ol' lady who is not very computer-savvy.

Make sure you are not using incompatible third party security
software. Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee
or Norton security programs. Those will need to be
uninstalled, not just disabled.

After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download
and install a more compatible antivirus like the free Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Even compatible antivirus programs will need to have their
email scanning option turned off. For more on this topic see

:

Why was Norton compatible with Windows Mail until just a few days ago? I
don't get it! What has changed? Do I need to cancel my Earthlink and find a
new Internet Service Provider?

Frank - Yes, the tech person did install that update; then he did the other
two things you suggested. Unfortunately, nothing worked. Please see my
messages to Gary dated 10/26 and 10/28. I have jumped through all the hoops
I have been presented with, but to no avail. I feel like going back to pen
and paper and telephone - they are slow, but at least they are reliable,
which is more than I can say for Microsoft, Vista, Norton, and Earthlink.
But thank you for trying to help me; I really do appreciate it.

First, install this update and empty the Outbox.
Messages may be stuck in the Outbox when you use Windows Mail on a
computer
that is running Windows Vista
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941090
It also works on other folders.

Then uninstall Norton.
Then run this program to finish uninstalling Norton:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
Then delete the account in WinMail and close WinMail.
Reopen WinMail and re-enter the account.
Now try to send.

Thunderbird works fine with Vista. You can easily download and install it yourself:
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/

The only difficulty is importing accounts, emails, and contacts into Thunderbird.
