Is this a problem with every fax number you call, or just a particular one?
If you're able to receive faxes, you aren't having any hardware problems. If
it's only one number, it might be an issue on their end.

If it's multiple numbers, you might want to check how you're dialing out --
make sure it's not automatically adding something it's not supposed to, like
dialing a 9 or 1 or an extra area code or call waiting code.

If you pick up the phone line and listen, you should hear any error message
the phone system is giving you. It might be something as simple as needing
to dial a 1 for a particular number, or if it's not a fax picking up at the
other end, you'll likely hear a very frustrated person on the other end who
is having to listen to a fax shrieking on a voice line.

The call gets answered by a fax machine. I can hear the fax noises from the
fax machine. But it seems as though the fax console dosen't reply. it just
beeps like a call waiting beep. I know it's not call waiting because I don't
have call waiting anymore.

Well, at least you know it's placing the call. One of them is waiting for a
response from the other; either one isn't sending a proper response, or the
other isn't "hearing" it. It sound like yours is the one waiting for the
response, though, and when it doesn't get the right answer, it times out.

Is this with every fax you send, or are you only sending to one number? As I
said, it might be a problem on their end as well, and you could be
troubleshooting for nothing. It would be a shame to be ripping your computer
apart if they're out of paper or something.

If it's your computer, you might be best off contacting whoever made the
modem. It sounds like the software is doing it's job, but the hardware isn't
talking (or listening).

Or you could try another modem. Give yours to someone who doesn't need to
fax.
