Can't See Workgroup PC Anymore

L

Lem

I have an XPPro SP1a and a Win98 SE connected via a Linksys wireless
router (XP box is hard wired; Win98 is wireless). This used to work
fine, and I can't think of any changes I've made, but here's the current
situation:

Both boxes can connect to Internet via the router

Using "Network Neighborhood" on Win98 box, I can see the XP box and
access shared resources on the XP box (printers and files).

On XP box, when I go to "my network places" and click on "view workgroup
computers," the Win98 box is not there. And of course, neither are the
shared resources on the Win98 box.

There is no firewall running on the Win98 box.

In the router configuration, both the XP and Win98 boxes are shown as
having been assigned active IP addresses by the router's DHCP server.

How do I get the XP box to see the Win98 box again?

I KNOW I had not changed this before -- but on the Win98 box I changed
the workgroup name from initial cap to all caps (the way it looks on the
XP "system properties" sheet), rebooted Win98, and now the Win98 box
shows up on XP's "my network places." Did one of the recent XP security
fixes make workgroup names case sensitive, or is this just a coincidence?

Lem,

normally they shouldn't be case sensitive, but I've seen some
user reports indicating a related problem on a few computers.
Cause unknown.

It is possible though, that the mere re-entering of the name
reestablished the correct settings, regardless of whether you
used upper or lower case.

My bet would be that, if you now change the name back to lower
case, it will still work. If not, you're one of those few with
that peculiar problem whose cause is unknown.
