Can't see unallocated space ?

E-Machines T2080, XP-Home. Drive went bad and my friend bought a
replacement Maxtor ATA 100 300 GB drive.

He used his system restore disk to reinstall the OS to the default
config. It uses Ghost. He now has a 32gb NTFS partition and his system
is running. But, there's another 268gb on the drive that is unused.

His expectation was to just partition that into an extended drive but
when we go into Disk Management it doesn't show any allocated space.
It's as if he has a 32gb (physical) drive in the machine with no extra
space on it.

How do we get it to show the addition space so we can extend/logical
that area?

Thats a very poor way of installing a larger drive.

Because of the way you installed the larger drive.

Use a better approach of cloning the original drive to the new one.

Use something like True Image to clone the drive and
have it expand the original partition to fill the new drive.

He doesn't have much choice. The system did not come with an XP CD,
just the restore disk. If he has to buy XP as well as a new drive,
it's probably time for a new computer. Seems rather drastic.

Also, as I mentioned the original drive failed and cannot be cloned
(the reason for the replacement in the first place).

Any other way to get him a second partition at this point?

I'm not sure I understand... are you saying that "True Image" can
restore the Ghost image from his recovery CD to his new drive? Or
that he should use True Image to create a CD from his restored drive,
then use it to force the image back to the hard drive with a larger
partition? If so, will true image allow him to create primary and
extended partitions on the new drive as part of the restore?

Did you check the jumpers on the Maxtor? Sounds like it is jumpered to
limit its capacity to 32GB.

There don't appear to be any Maxtor documented jumpers other than the
Master/Slave jumpers.

Install Partitionmagic (it's not free, but a working version should be
available from somewhere).

The unallocated space clearly has not been formated and therefore cannot be
seen by the operating system. Partionmagic will be able to format this space
and then merge the two partions togehter to make one.
