cant see thumbnails in "my comp" for win2k pro

I cant see the thumbnail pictures in the my computer
windows on my win 2k pro machine I have selected view:
thumbnails and it only display's the file type icon in a
big box for each file. I am at wits end as I do alot of
photo editing and it helps me find the pic I want to work
on among the several hundred in any given folder
