Can't see text in incoming emails

V

Vickie

I have Vista on my new computer and my husband recently added a signature to
his email file at work with a logo. I can no longer see his text in the
emails he sends to me. I also cannot type anything in the email created when
replying to these messages. I should note that he has Vista at work also on
some of their computers including the one he uses and he has none of these
issues. Is there a setting I need to change? I've searched the internet
along with this site for a solution and haven't seen this particular problem.
If need be I can send the email property details to show you. When I got to
properties of the email and show the details, it shows the message included
in 'part 1' of the message. Whatever that means. HELP! I can't figure this
out.

Is he sending the messages using Outlook? If so, they are usually in the
RTF
format, which Windows Mail cannot understand.

When you look at the properties of his message, does it suggest
that there may be an encoded attachment?
By any chance, is your WM configured to read plain text only:
Tools, Options, Read, uncheck "Read all messages in plain text."

Can you see his text if you do the following...
Tools - Options - Read
[x] read all messages in plain text
Apply

Vickie

No I already checked that. It is not checked. All messages with html and
pics come through fine but the ones that added the signature.

And their logo comes through as a paperclip

YES! But now what about all the other html coded messages coming in? Now it
doesn't work for them. I checked. It's all in the read format.

hmmm.... if you can see his HTML as plain text, why not the others?

What happens if you try...
Tools - options - Security
uncheck [ ] Block images and other external content in HTML e-mail.
Apply

Actually I can't see his html as plain text. I was talking about all other
emails I am receiving. When I change to plain text format and I can't get
any html which I shouldn't be able to so I am now thinking this is definitely
a AV problem. We have McAffee. I will try them to see if they can find the
problem. Thank you for all your time and help.

I have the exact same problem. It started recently on Windows Mail. I have
not found a solution other than switching over to view the message as plain
text. I sure hope someone has a better fix.

Most versions of the Norton antivirus software eventually cause assorted
problems in Windows Mail, although this usually takes longer than just
a few weeks. If this happens, just disabling the Norton program seldom
helps; you usually need to uninstall it instead. You often then need to
run this cleanup program to take care of what the uninstall left behind:

You may even need to remove your email account under Windows Mail,
then restart Windows Mail and add the account again.

If this cures your problem, you may want a replacement antivirus
program that doesn't cause such problems. Most versions of the
McAfee antivirus program and a recent version of the Trend antivirus
program are bad choices; they also cause assorted problems in
Windows Mail. I recommend either avast! or AVG, either one with
a custom install that tells it to leave out the part that scans email.

Thank you so much for your reply. In my case I was able to disable Noton's
scanning of email and once I rebooted everything was fine.

You're welcome.

You'd better hope that you have a version of Norton in which that fix
lasts. For most versions, you either can't disable email scanning or
it doesn't provide a long lasting fix if you do.

You might tell us which version of Norton you're using so we can
suggest that first for users of that version.
