Can't see computer in workgroup, but shared resources are availabl

Hi. I have a network of three Win XP Home SP2 computers and one WinME
computer networked using a US Robotics wireless router. One of the WinXP
computers (called Main) does not show up in the MSHOME workgroup, where it is
configured to be. This is true not only on the other three machines, but
also with the problem computer as well. In other words, if you navigate to
the MSHOME workgroup with Main, you can see all the other computers on the
network, but not Main itself. The same can be seen on all the other
computers.

All of the shared resources on Main are still accessible, however. It can
be pinged, it can be accessed by typing \\Main in the address bar, and the
resources can be mapped as network drives. Any ideas on why the computer is
not showing up as a member of the workgroup?

Thanks.

Yachnin,

This is a well known problem here, but can have many causes. One of the most
common would be a misconfigured or overlooked personal firewall, or other
security component. There are several other possibilities too, and any might be
the cause of your problem. Read this article with an open mind.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html

Look at provide "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and
"net config workstation", from each XP computer, and we can probably diagnose
the problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions
precisely (download browstat!):

Thanks for your reply. I've added the diagnostics you requested from two of
the XP computers. One of them, Main, is the problematic machine. The
problem persists regardless of which of the other machines is present. I've
tried shutting down firewall and security software to see if that helps, but
no change. Also, I noticied that there have been problems with NVIDIA nForce
products. I *think* that I have a nForce2, which I *think* predates the
introduction of the firewall. I'm not sure, though. Is there a good way of
checking this?

Hi. IPV6 was installed but disabled. I uninstalled it, and that business
about Teredo Tunneling disappeared from ipconfig /all after rebooting.
However, there is still no change... Main is still not visible in the MSHOME
workgroup.

Thanks,
Brahm

OK, Brahm,

Now let's look for LSP / Winsock corruption.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/problems-with-lsp-winsock-layer-in.html

Following that, please post complete, updated, copies of the same diagnostics.
Be thorough. And we'll get to diagnosing your problem.

Hi. I've run through the steps you provided on that link, short of actually
reinstalling the physical network device. Still no luck. I've provided the
updated diagnostics below. I may not respond to you because I'm heading out
of town for a while, but I will check your response and act on it eventually.
Thanks a lot for your help!

Hi. I've run through the steps you provided on that link, short of actually
reinstalling the physical network device. Still no luck. I've provided the
updated diagnostics below. I may not respond to you because I'm heading out
of town for a while, but I will check your response and act on it eventually.
Thanks a lot for your help!

One of the most common causes of this problem would be a misconfigured or
overlooked personal firewall, or other security component. There are several
other possibilities too, and any might be the cause of your problem.

And make sure that NetBT is consistently set.

If no help from the above articles, let's do some relational analysis. You'll
have to download PSTools (free), a small and very versatile set of tools from
SysInternals.
