Can't see computer in My Network Places

I have a home wireless network with three laptops talking
to a Linksys wireless router. Two of the laptops are in a
workgroup. On one laptop (Toshiba) I can see the other
laptop (IBM) in the workgroup and can attachn to it and
share files. However, when I'm on the IBM I cannot see
the Toshiba in My Network Places. On the IBM the IBM
shows up in My Network Places as itself. I have the
Toshiba configured to share. I'm not sure what else to
try or check.

Also, how can I add the 3rd computer to the network? This
is a work laptop and it nomally connects to an NT domain.
I'm afraid to change anything on it after a horrible
previous experience where I added it to a workgoup and
then could no longer login when I rebooted the machine.

Make sure that there is not a personal firewall configured on any of the computers
that may be blocking network access or browser announcements. Of course do not
disable any personal firewall unless there is other firewall protection to the
internet. Also make sure all the computers have file and print sharing installed and
enabled on the network adapter and that the server service is started - "net start
server" should show it already started. Netbios over tcp/ip needs to be enabled in
tcp/ip properties/advanced/wins and the computers need to be on the same network
address as shown in "ipconfig /all". Normally the first three octets will need to be
the same assuming a class C network as in 192.168.1.xxx where 192.168.1 would be the
network address and the .xxx would be the host address which would be different on
each computer and the subnet mask would be 255.255.255.0. It may also be possible
that you need to give a little more time for the browse list to complete especially
if you turn computers on and off a lot and be sure to shut them down properly.

If you want to logon to your domain computer at home via "cached credentials" you
could try mapping shares to your other computers using Windows Explorer/tools and
select alternate credentials/connect as another user and then make the share
persistent though it would not work obviously while you were not on the home network.
Hopefully your work computer is using dhcp to make tcp/ip configuration simple at
both places. --- Steve

Steve, thanks. I was able to share the entire computer by
adding a new user under the administrator on the computer
that I wanted to share and then mapping the drive.
However, I still can't figure out how to share the
printer. When I go to "add a printer" I put in the IP
address of the machine with the printer attached. It
seems like the system recognizes the address but I get
back an error message that says "could not connect to the
printer. access is denied." I'm not sure where that is
coming from - I don't have any kind of security,
permissions, etc. set. I know there is a way to do this
but I am stumped!

Steve, I finally figure it out. You name your workgroup
the same as your work domain. But that's not enough. You
have to create a user on the computer that you want to
share under administrator. This will allow you to first
map a drive from the work laptop to the shared computer
and then you can also share the printer attached to the
shared computer. Voila'!

Glad you got it to work. Yes you do need an account to authenticate to unless the
guest account is enabled on server machine which is usually not recommended. You
don't have to name your workgroup the same as the domain name. It may be convenient
for browsing purposes however if you want all the machines to show in the same group
in Network Places. --- Steve

I have a home wired network using Mercury KOB BR100 Ethernet broadband router. I can't see any computer in My Network Places. I can ping the router at 192.168.1.1 and my own computer at 192.168.1.2 respectively but cannot ping the other computers in the workgroup, for example at 192.168.1.3 or 192.168.1.4. I cannot even click open Computers Near Me. What's going wrong? Is it related to the settings in Windows 2000 or to the router?

I could only see one computer, then remembered to switch on the
Microsoft networking feature in Kerio software firewall. Got both
computers now.

Hi, Fred:
You need to go to set your printer to share with
another machine. You just go to Start->Settings->Printer
and Fax. Click on the printer icon that you want to share
with another machine, then right click the mouse. You will
see the share functionality show. Just click on "share"
and setup the proper information, then you will be able to
share this printer. Hope this information will help.
