Can't Scan on Network

I have two Dell computers networked to run off one Dell
1600n 4 in 1. Both computers can print off of it, and the
copy and fax functions work fine. But it WILL NOT SCAN.
Dell support informs me that Windows XP does not allow
for scanning on a network, because it doesn't know which
of the two computers to scan the image to. Could this
possibly be true of XP? Is there any way around this?

Does the printer itself support scanning over a network? I suspect it does
not, as most inexpensive multifunction/scanners do not. Check the owner's
manual or the manufacturer's Web site.

Thanks for getting back to me. Yes, it IS a network
printer. It is a $650 Dell Laser Multi-Function Printer
1600n. The network works fine for printing from the two
computers, but just not for scanning, and Dell Support is
claiming this is a Windows XP issue. For instance, when I
go to My Computer "Scanners and Cameras" it is not
recognising the scanner, even after I add it and the
drivers. Why? How do I solve this?

P.S. Don't ever buy a Dell, their support is the worst
thing I have ever encountered.

There is a major difference between a network PRINTER and a network SCANNER.
According to the documentation at the Dell web site this is a network
printer but scan and fax are not supported over a network.
