can't run disc cleanup

I have been trying to clean up unwanted files but
everytime that I try to run disc clean up it either will
not open at all or it shows up with only 4 boxes in
the "workin bar" and stays that way it will not
progress ,I have given it hours to finish but it does not
seem to work, is there anyway to fix this?
My computer is running so slow and it needs to be done.

Line 48, Right column "Disk Cleanup - Compress..."
Save on Desktop.
Double click the icon once downloaded.
The icon can then be discarded.
