I can't run defrag on my gateway laptop. its running xp media center edition
2004 and out of the blue when i went to run disk defrag(like i have done
almost daily) it came up with a message stating can't run defrag because a
task is scheduled to run. please run chkdsk c:/ -f . so i go in to
comand prompt and try to run chkdsk but unable to because c:/ is in use . I
am fairly computer compitent but this has truly caused severe frustration.
can someone please help me . thank you very much sincerely craig

When you run chkdsk on the system partition, usually C, the system
invites you to say whether to want to run chk the next time the computer
is restarted. You need to say yes and restart the computer.

I agree with Gerry. Chkdsk will ask you whether to run ChkDsk the next time
you start your computer. This might be because Windows detected some minor
problems in the filesystem, and to prevent further problems, Windows will try
to repair this before defragmenting.

It's not that easy. I narrowed the cause of the problem down to
Windows/Office service pack or MS-updater. The problem starts after those
updates are installed.

The hard disk I run is SATA, controlled by NVIDIA driver, and works ok
before MS updates of clean installes (new partitioned drive). Could it have
something to do with this?

The problem is that scandisk would stop looping after completion, but can't,
as it is unable to do so. This again won't allow you to defrag, cause it will
allways be scheduled to run first.

SOLUTION is in the MS solution center serching by error message.
