Can't rollback to WMP10; forced to use 11?

Wiped my harddrive and completely reinstalled Windows. I'm partial to WMP10,
so I tried to do the rollback thing (install WMP11, uninstall for the WMP10
rollback), but since my harddrive is all shiny and "new," there's nothing to
rollback to.

I've tried downloading WMP10 directly, but each time I try, an error message
telling me my version of Windows is "not compatible" with that version of
Windows Media Player pops up -- so, am I being forced to use 11, or is there
a way around this?

If you have Windows XP then you should have v9 or v10 on it already. So I
don't get why you're installing v11 to roll-back.

If you were getting the compatibility message prior to doing this, see
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#wrongver (actually the Q under this link,
which doesn't have its own index-point).

Well, my boyfriend is the one who handles computer matters, and he can't seem
to help me, either. What I know is that I'm using XP Professional, and when I
went to open WMP for the first time after reinstalling Windows, I was
instructed to download it from the Microsoft website.

If you roll back WMP11, you should just magically be using WMP10 again
without you having to do anything at all.

You cannot install WMP10 on top of the v11 Format Runtime, which is what you
were accidentally trying to do at the end there.

So: what exact version (this is a long number such as 10.0.0.1 or such) is
WMP right now?

I should be able to, but I'm not. I go to Add/Delete Programs, do the
rollback, and then when I try to run WMP, I get a message saying I need to
install it again from the Microsoft website.

Right now, I have WMP completely uninstalled, but the version I've tried
installing is the most current one available on the MS site.
