Can't repair XP Pro after installing SP2

Guest

Hope someone has seen this. I installed SP2 on all my XP Pro Workstations.
Now, if I try to repair or reinstall XP Pro using my original XP Pro CD, I
get an error telling me the installed version of XP is newer than the CD
version. The only option it gives me is to install the CD version in a
seperate partition.

Does anyone have a work around for this or do I need to uninstall SP2,
repair or reinstall XP to fix the affected machine, then re-install SP2.
Seems like a lot of work to fix a corrupt XP Pro installation.

Thanks in advance.

Hi

You can uninstall SP2, but a better way is create a slipstreamed SP2 CD:

You can download the SP2 file (266 MBs) from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...BE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en -
or if you have a copy of the SP2 CD, you can copy the xpsp2.exe file from
that CD onto your hard disk/partition and use that:

then follow the directions in the following article to create a slipstreamed
XP CD:

Will;

Looks like the answer I was looking for. I will give that a try. If you
could indulge me one more question, once I create this CD I am assuming I can
use it like my license cd for new installations as well, so that way when I
install this on new computers, I already have the SP2??

Thanks again, Urock

Hi

Yes, once created the slipstreamed SP2 CD can be used to perform a 'Repair'
install and also (with the 25 Alphanumeric Product Key) to 'Clean' install
XP. You can only install one instance of XP from one CD onto one machine.
If you have various XP CDs - with different PKs - you will have to create a
separate slipstreamed SP2 CD for each one.

In regard to making a Win XP SP2 slipstream CD,
I have WIN XP PRO SP1 CD
SO do I only move the i386 and Docs folders over
(without the SP1 folder) to my hard disk to transfer
and include the root directory files
OR do I move all the folders including the SP1 folder
My root directory on CD looks like below:-

Root FOLDERS are:
Docs
i386
SP1

Root FILES are:
autorun.inf
readme.htm
setup.exe

Thanking you in anticipation

Can't one use the recovery console to make a repair? I have Win
XP Home with SP2. I don't have a slipstreamed CD. I have the
Recovery Console in my StartUp Menu. Windows repairs are made
from the console.
