Hello.
After a crash, a virus scan and a few other troubles, I've lost my network
connection.
Trying Control Panel -> Network Connections -> right-click on an icon ->
repair
gives an error message.
Trying ipconfig /renew fails with:
"an operation was attempted on something that is not a socket".

I tried the procedure given in knowledge base 817571 (+ the comments of
"Xpuser" on usenet), namely:
- export then delete the registry keys
hklm\system\currentcontrolset\services\winsock(2)
- reboot
- reinstall tcpip: in a properties window of the network connections,
install -> protocol -> add -> have disk -> "C:\Windows\inf", select tcpip,
and this seems to work allright
- reboot
- and it still doesn't work.

Now I'm not sure it is just a configuration issue: it might be that some
essential files have been corrupted or even deleted during the previous
troubles.
During the virus scan I had to delete a file called
C:\Windows\System32\aklsp.dll. I suspect this is related to my problem.

So my questions:
- is it possible to reinstall the files needed for the tcpip stack from the
windows install cd?
- are there other things that I shoud try?

Thanks for any hint or idea.
