Can't remove shortcut desktop icons

I have some desktop shortcut icons that the system will
not let me delete. They are for programs that have been
removed but the shortcuts remain on the desktop. Right
click and delete results in "access denied". Tried to
take control in safe mode but still won't accept the
delete.

You are getting this message because your account does
not have the rights to remove the shortcuts. Try right
clicking on the shortcut. Go to the Security tab. You
should see a list of users and groups that has rights to
the shortcut. By clicking on each name you will see the
permissions for each. You must have Full Control checked
to delete the file.
