Can't remove application

how can i make sure ALL traces of a program are removed.
I have tried to uninstall a program and it has failed. i
have tried to 'hack' it out but when i try to reinstall,
it still says its there..

any ideas anyone?

You would need to know what it did when it installed. What files were
copied to your machine. What registry changes were made. Depends on what
the app was.

If it was a virus/worm/adware/etc. there are lots of 3rd party scanners that
can probably find those files and reg entries and tell you that the bad app
made them.
