I'm trying to reformat and reinstall XP on my primary
(C:) partition but the install automatically puts setup
files on C: so I can't delete and reformat it. Is there
any way to get these files on another partiton or any way
around this?

Boot from the XP CD. Follow directions to remove the current operating
system and install XP as the only operating system. You will lose
everything on the C: drive so back up everything first.

Change your bios to boot from the XP cd, then you can format the partition
and reinstall.

are you haveing problems removing original copy. If this
is the problem, try install win98. This will cause you to
format the hard drive as win98 needs a fresh slate to
start with

You boot from the CD and do a clean install.
Click on or copy and paste the link below into your web browser address bar.

You do it as part of a reinstall of the system after booting the XP CD
direct. Enter Setup, and after the license agreement take New Install.
When it asks you to confirm where, hit ESC; select and delete the
current partition and make a new RAW one to be formatted at the next
stage

The important point is the delete. Without that it will just go ahead
and make a new install over the top of the old one
