Can't record video, only sound

I am trying to record on Vaio Media Centre from a PAL VHS VCR via the
Composite connection using Movie Maker. I have used the setting 'Best quality
for playback on my computer' - 2.1 Mbps/720x576 pixels. The display informs
me that the file created will be 14MB for every minute of recording. Only
1.4MB appears to be saved every minute. When I play back, the screen is grey
and only the sound track is played.

I have experimented with other settings with reduced bit rates and reduced
screen quality - no joy. On the 'Configure video capture device' properties
dialog the top Compression setting seems to be corrupted - it looks like
'j¦¦P'. The other compression settings are not defined in help (YUY2, UYVY,
YVU9) and selecting one of them does not solve the problem.

Any ideas?

If you are trying to do this with MM then it rarely works, try using another
app.

Thanks for replying. You confirm what I suspected, though what you say is
scandalous. MS should be ashamed. Looking at all the other problems people
are having/have had with MM, Microsoft might as well stop wasting users' time
and bin it or create something that works. I've certainly wasted about ten
hours of my life grappling with it.

I have Ulead/Corel Video Studio 10 on another machine, so I'll probably try
that.

It's just not desinged to do that!!

You wouldn't write a letter using excel, or create a database in word, so
using MM for something it is not designed for and then saying it is crap
just isn't fair.

MM is desinged for editing dv.avi from am IEEE1394 connected appliance or
wmv files.

Check out the Ulead forums,
http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/search.php?mode=results
and you'll find just as many people there with similar problems with
analogue capture.

Your pc should ahve come with an app for this job, being media centre, so
use that one.
