Can't receive message to oneself

A client asked me this question, which has stumped me:

"My wife set up a gmail account for herself. She gets email fine with it,
except for email she sends herself from Outlook. If she sends the message
to herself inside the Gmail interface in Google, she receives the message in
Outlook. But is she sends the same message from Outlook to her email account
in Google, Outlook does not retrieve it, although it shows up in Gmail.

"This problem does not occur with other email accounts she has. I have
reviewed all her settings, and they are all correct. There is nothing in
the Junk Mail box, and I added settings her email account to the safe
senders list,

Outlook just doesn't want to retrieve this message. Do you have any idea
what is going on?"

Any ideas?

Has she set up POP mail access in GMail & set up the correct server settings
in Outlook? There are specific ports, authentication & servers to set up
gmail in OL. Directions on the Gmail site. You cannot use your ISP's server
settings for Gmail.

It’s a known Gmail 'feature'. It’s not just Outlook but it also happens
to me with Outlook Express, Windows Mail, and Windows Live Mail.

Is there a workaround? What is the cause? Does Google know about
this?

No.
Gmail policy or bad coding.
I've complained but it falls on deaf ears.
