Can't receive mail using Windows Live Mail

W

WayneK

I've been working on this all day but no luck so far. I have Vista
Home Premium on my new laptop and Windows XP Home Edition on my
desktop. I use comcast.net for one of my email accounts. I've
downloaded the settings from my XP to my laptop using easy transfer.
I can send mail from my laptop using this account. However, I can not
receive any mail here. I use a hotmail account to send test messages
to my comcast account. I've set up the email on both computers to
leave a copy on the server for the time being. The desktop with XP
and McAfee has no problem receiving the messages. In reading comments
here, I've removed McAfee from the laptop and installed AVAST. It
hasn't helped. I've checked the settings numerous times and have
actually re-entered them a couple of times. At times I have noticed
that "receiving mail" appears very, very briefly but then goes to "no
new messages." I NEVER get any error messages. Any help would be
appreciated.

Did you use the McAfee cleanup tool?

Did you use the standard install for avast!? If so, it may help to
uninstall it
and then do a custom install, where you tell it to leave out the part that
scans email.

Comcast is slow at writing instructions for connecting email programs
newer than Outlook Express. However, their instructions for Outlook
Express should work under Windows Live Mail if you avoid the One
Click Fix.

Do any of the incoming message go to your Deleted Items folder or
your Junk E-mail folder, probably marked as already read?

Thanks for the suggestions. I don't remember if I used the McAfee
cleanup tool or not. I did many things. I chatted with them and they
had me disable all McAfee programs. This didn't change anything so
they felt it was not a McAfee problem. I have uninstalled and
reinstalled AVAST using custom install and excluded the email scans.
This hasn't changed anything. There are no items in the junk E-mail
or Deleted Items folders. The items I sent out are in the Sent Items
folder. I am hoping to get this resolved before I leave next week for
an extended period of time. This was a primary reason for getting the
laptop. Thanks again for the suggestions. Any additional thoughts
would be most welcomed.

If all else fails, I suggest you give Windows Live Mail a try:http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

I am also having the same problem. Windows Mail fails to download
messages from the server. There are no error messages or timeouts.
It simply claims there are no new messages. I can send messages. The
account is setup properly in Windows Mail. I have removed Norton and
disabled Windows Firewall. Any suggestions?

Removing Norton often needs a separate cleanup.

Sometimes you even have to delete the email account under Windows Mail
and then create it again to finish the cleanup.

I have the exact same problem. Mail goes out fine. Mail doesn't come
in. It doesn't go anywhere else. I've been using Windows Live Mail for
about two months and love it, depend on it. Now I'm stuck using a gmail
account that I hate. No error messages, quick reference "checking for
email" and then "no new email". Please help me get it back. I have
been without it since April 8th at 9pm. Our email is cavtel.net and
I've contacted them and gotten no further. I've contacted Windows to no
improvement. One suggestion I got on my own was to delete the the
Windows Live Mail altogether and reinstall it. However I want to know
if I do this if all my emails will be lost. I can't afford to lose them
and don't know how to back them up myself. Please help!

You're likely to get better answers for Windows Live Mail problems
if you ask in newsgroup:

If Windows Live Mail goes through the motions of checking for mail,
and it reports back, "No new messages", then it is working properly.

Did you go to the server via webmail and verify that messages
were waiting to be downloaded?

What happens when you send an email to yourself?
