Using XP, Office Pro and am unable to open my outlook file. It is about 1.3G
and is the only file that defrag will not defragment (reports that it is 24k+
segments!). Obviously I have not been managing my email very well enough. I
have run the scanpst , chkdisk and defrag sevaral times, with an error
message that the file cannot be accessed. Trying to copy outlook.pst file on
the same machine results in an error message "...Data Error: C...R...C...).
Where do I go from here? It is not obvious, but could Activesync be holding
this file open preventing the utilities from working? If I can get through
this with intact email, I promise to the email gods that I will do better.

thanks

The absolute upper limit on a .PST in Outlook 2002 and earlier is 2GB and
most users start having problems upwards of 1GB. Look here for the
information you need to hopefully recover at least some of your data:

Ok, I have seen this and will try to work on my pst but am unable to make a
backup copy. I have tried locally and then to another computer on my network.
All copy attempts fail with a CRC error. Is there another way to make a back
up copy?

Also what effect will system restore through "msconfig" have? If I select a
day before I started having this problem, will it help?

Your help is appreciated,
Thanks

I don't think system restore has any effect on .PST files, but if all else
fails, you can try it...

CRC errors are typically the result of bad CDs or perhaps a bad CD/DVD
burner -- check out this article, it has a free program you can download that
might help (NOTE: I have never used the software in question and cannot
vouch for it personally -- use at your own risk!):
