cant read my downloaded files

It seems that ever time I try and down load a file it opens in windows
microsoft word ,and its all weird looking...cant read the first word on it

Where are you trying to download these files from? What kind of files are
they? What are their extensions (the last three characters of the file
names, fter the dot)?
