The media may be scratched or dirty, use a CD cleaning disk to clean the
lasers..
Your optical drive my be old, may need replacing or updated firmware..
Does the drive show in the BIOS..?
Have you tried it in a different computer to see if it works there..?
What is the make & model of the optical drive and or your computer..?
Cheers

Please help us to help you. What does "My computer can no longer read any
disks" mean? What happens when you try? How are you trying? If you get an
error message, please quote it verbatim.

Are you talking just about CDs and DVDs when you say disks? Or does the
problem extend to floppy disks? I assume you're not having a problem with
hard disks, even though you say "any disks."

Can you not get to data CDs, music CDs, videos? All or just some? Is the
problem just that they don''t start automatically? What happens if you
insert a CD and double-click on the CD drive in My Computer?

Ok here is what happens. When i put a disk in nothing appears on screen like
it used to, so i opened the "My Computer" file and clicked on the DVD drive
icon and it gives me the "please insert disk" massage. This computer is a
Dell B130 desktop that i got in 2004 so its fairly new. And the disk i put in
has no scratches or fingerprints or anything
