Can't read cd-rw

G

Gustavo Velazquez

I have a few files backed up into cd-rw disc, and some
into a cd-r discs. When I put the cd-r's in my cd rom I
have no problem reading and retrieving files. But when I
put my cd-rw discs the cdrom and even the cd burner don't
read them. When using windows explorer and click on the
cd-rom or burner it keeps telling me to put a disc
inside...but the cd-rw is already in.
To see if my discs were defective I put them in a win 98
computer and they read fine, but not in my winxp pro
system. The funny thing is that both drives can read cd-
r fine. On previous instalations of windows I did'nt
have this problem so I know that is not a hardware
problem (cd rom or burner), but a software problem.
Any sugestions will be greatly appreciated

Did you upgrade your PC to WinXP ? It sounds almost like the wrong drivers
in there. Also I do not have any idea if this could be the case, but I have
seen a large number of postings saying that a Win98 3.5" Floppy cannot be
read in XP, perhaps this is true of some CD's ? I tried out about 10 of
mine, some recorded by me, some just older software and all was OK in XP
Pro.

CD-R/Ws formatted with Direct CD 2.x or 3.x or other early versions of
packet writing software like InCD or Packet CD can't be read on Windows XP.
While XP has built in a UDF Format reading capability it can not read older
UDF formats. You will need to either finalize those disks on the system that
created them or install packet writing software on your XP system.

I suspect the reason you can open and read the disks on your Windows 98
system is because it has the older version of packet writing software
currently installed. Did you use packetwriting software like Direct CD to
burn the files to the CD-R/W?

Alex Nichol's has a page on CD Burning in XP that might be helpful. You can
find it here http://www.aumha.org/a/xpcd.htm
