Can't publish

P

Pat N.

I've been unable to completely publish my web site. (I
should say "re-publish" because this only started
happening when I changed some pages, had trouble re-
publishing, then deleted everything on the server and
tried to re-publish the whole site). A few files will
transfer and then it gets hung up and doesn't finish. I
was told that it could be a firewall problem so I checked
with my ISP -- they say that's impossible because I don't
even have a firewall. My host says it definitely isn't a
server problem because some files transfer before it gets
hung up. That leaves some type of problem with
Frontpage, but I have no idea what. The whole web site
works fine on my hard drive -- it just won't publish.

Any clue would be appreciated. Thanks.

Close FrontPage, do a file search for files named *.web and delete all found.
Reopen FrontPage, open your local web and then select File > Publish.

Tried your suggestion . . . found 5 files, deleted
them . . . unfortunately, no change. Any other clues?
Thanks.

If you deleted "everything" on the server it's possible you deleted a file needed by FrontPage and
the extensions.
Have your host Re-install the extensions and then try publishing.

Very possible . . . but host says the extensions are
installed and working properly. They do some kind of a
test. So . . . 2 things: (1) for future reference, what
do I delete on the server if I just want to start from
scratch? I thought I deleted the main folder that
contained all my files. (2) for my current problem . . .
what do I try next? I'm stumped. My host says to check
my settings . . . but I have no idea what settings
they're talking about. Thanks!

Problem continues . . . my host swears the problem is not
with them. I uninstalled and re-installed FP -- same
results. Just for kicks, I tried to publish to another
file on my hard drive (have no idea if that means

At what point do you get an error while publishing - be specific
- Do you get to log in
- Does it start publishing
- When it stops what does the screen say
(any error messages, on what file does it stop)
Are any of your files very large (over 1MB media files?)

I can log in fine, then I can see that folders are being
created and some files are transferring. After just a
few, it gets hung up for several min. at which time I get
the msg. "The server sent a response which FP could not
parse. Check to make sure the FP server extensions are
installed properly." No media files -- it usually hangs
up on a 12KB file. None are over 30 KB. That msg. can
mean (according to Microsoft) that I have a firewall
problem . . . I've spoken to my ISP and have disabled
every firewall that I know of . . . no change. My host
(GISOL) will only answer questions in very brief, barely
legible answers . . . they say I DO NOT have a server
problem because some files do transfer and they tested my
site. I've asked them to set up my web acct. from
scratch and to reapply the extensions to my acct. . .
they just keep answering that it should work fine. I
also uninstalled and re-installed FP (which had no
effect) and tried publishing to another folder on my hard
drive which worked fine. I just tried something else
(only because I have no idea what to try next) . . . I
tried publishing one folder or file at a time. Some
would get stuck for a long period of time, until I
clicked "cancel", some would publish just fine, and
others would immediately (within 1/2 sec.) give me the
msg. "Server connection timed out".
If you have ANY suggestion, I would certainly be
interested . . . I've been sitting here for 4 days trying
to figure it out! Thanks.

Sounds like a server connection timeout
- ask them if they can increase the time out

Also since you have several bad publishing events try doing some clean up

1) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all FP Temp Files
Usually in C:\WINDOWS\Temp and %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp
- in FP 2003 you need to look in the super hidden folder
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\FrontPageTempDir
2) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden *.web files
Usually in
%USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache

Then reopen your site in FP and run a tools recalculate hyperlinks before you try to publish

Also, you might want to check and make sure you're not trying to upload Log files to the server (or any other files that cannot be written to) that you may have downloaded when copying your site to your local drive. I had that happen once it & it drove me nuts for a day.

You also may want to find a friendly knowledgeable host!...you know one that will actually help ya?! :)

How would I know if I'm trying to publish log files??
(novice here). I'm changing hosts ASAP . . . will try to
find one that has phone support (or people who speak
English!) Any ideas on that?
Thanks.

I did a search for .tmp files and only found 2 that
had "Frontpage" in the file name . . . I have no idea
what other files to delete (and there are tons of them) --
deleted those 2. I had already deleted the .web files
at someone else's suggestion, but they were back so I
deleted them again. I have Windows XP and FP 2002 so I
didn't do anything with a "super hidden folder". I
recalculated hyperlinks and tried to publish . . . same
exact result. Speaking of hyperlinks, my web has
acquired tons of them (which have not always been there),
some of which are broken and many that appear to be
identical when listed. I didn't know what (if anything)
to do to clean it up because all of the hyperlinks that I
created (internal and external) seem to work fine. Could
this be an issue?

Thanks for all your help!

-----Original Message-----
Sounds like a server connection timeout
- ask them if they can increase the time out

Also since you have several bad publishing events try doing some clean up

1) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all FP Temp Files
Usually in C:\WINDOWS\Temp and %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp
- in FP 2003 you need to look in the super hidden folder
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\FrontPageTempDir
2) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden *.web files
Usually in
%USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache

Then reopen your site in FP and run a tools recalculate
hyperlinks before you try to publish

Should I have a file named index.html in both the
cp/scripts and cp/scripts/formmail-doc folders? I
noticed this when I was looking in "unlinked files".
Just grasping at straws here.

Thanks.

index.html files only need to be in your root web and any subwebs, but are also used to prevent folder content browsing (if it is
turned on by your host)
- or may have been created by your scripts
- won't affect publishing

--

| Should I have a file named index.html in both the
| cp/scripts and cp/scripts/formmail-doc folders? I
| noticed this when I was looking in "unlinked files".
| Just grasping at straws here.
|
| Thanks.

The *.web files are created every time you close a FP web

If you have "tons of files" in your temp folder delete them all periodically
- they slow your system down

Links in your page do not affect publishing

--

|

=?iso-8859-1?Q?Crash_Gordon=AE?=

the statistics files look different on different hosts, sometimes they are weirdly named folders wxzy etc. if you look in them they have lots of pages (htm, html) that look like statistic bar graphs and stuff like that. If you find that you have a folder full of junk like that on your local machine you need to mark it NOT to publish up to the server (because it can't anyway) and it trying to do so may be a problem (it was with me)

I switched to an excellent (english speaking) host a few months ago - friendly and knowledgable and Windows based. AND I've never been on hold more than a minute! I know have 3 webs on them and will be putting more clients sites there asap.

| How would I know if I'm trying to publish log files??
| (novice here). I'm changing hosts ASAP . . . will try to
| find one that has phone support (or people who speak
| English!) Any ideas on that?
| Thanks.
