can't play mpeg-4 files

Well, I downloaded the codec for Mpeg-4 video files, and they will not play. So I downloaded Quicktime, and it plays halfway through then breaks up with no sound. I update the QT and it does the exact same thing. I have downloaded the video file over and over and it still doesn't work. What is going on?
 
Hi, Where did you get the file from? What extension does it have? There
are several variations of the MPEG-4 codec.
