Can't play DVD's on my media player

Hi
When I try to play a DVD I get the following message: Windows Media Player
cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your
computer. When I select help a Microsoft web page comes up and talkes about:
MPEG-2 Codec Pack for Windows Vista and: If you are running Windows XP, go to
Plug-ins for Windows Media Player to learn how to purchase a compatible
MPEG-2 decoder (also known as a DVD decoder). I never had problems in the
past playing DVD's; can you tell me whats going on and how to correct it?
Thanks.

What is going on is that Windows Media Player needs another compatiable DVD
software to play DVDs . I use InterVideo WinDVD .

You can download a free trial version
http://www.intervideo.com

then ,when it expires ,you should purchase it or remove it.

Hi
Thanks for your reply and information. Can you explain why in the past, when
my DVD worked fine, I did not have to install additional software, what has
changed? Thanks.

If you want to play DVDs you need to go to your computer brand's website. And
go to you model and download the drivers to play DVD...

To play multimedia files you need codecs installed. A limited assortment is
included with Media Player. Media Player 10 supports more types of
multimedia than its predecessors but support for DVDs is still limited.

Codecs come as stand alone packages, bundled in with other programs and
sometimes as extra software included with a hardware purchase. Example: I
usually get a set whenever I purchase a display adapter.

FAQ about codecs from the Windows Media Player web pages:

I would highly recommend using VLC player http://www.videolan.org/
It is a freeware player, and can play just about anything (although if
you really have no dvd decoder then that may not work)
To check and see if you have a dvd decoder installed, click start-run
and type dvdupgrd /detect in the run box and press enter.

When you purchased your dvd drive, you should have received some
software with it (for instance I got Nero express with a dvd decoder
packaged with it when I bought my dvd writer)
If your pc was an OEM box that already had a dvd drive, then it was
likely pre-installed on the pc and you may want to visit the OEM
website, or contact them.

DVD decoders are third party software and have nothing to do with
either Windows or Media Player. XP does not come with dvd decoders most
likely for licensing reasons.
