Cant ping server

K

Hello,im running into all sorts of crap,im using 2003
server, but that shoudnt really matter, here is the problem
now,i can ping all of my clients, but not my server...and
cant ping the clients from the server, both are on same
subnet,both get on the internet...using 192.x.x.x and i
can ping the other clients from both server and client. is
there any ideas here.....i just made a new post cause im
not sure if it had anything to do with that master browser
error....i know more about subnetting and all,and know all
IP's are correct so is the subnet class c by default,so i
think since it always is DNS but that doesnt really make
since being im pinging which is the tcp stack, and not DNS.
So any thoughts here...this is really got me!!!

Can we assume you mean cannot ping BY ADDRESS?
If not, then if address works, and name fails you have a
NAME RESOLUTION problem (usually DNS, but that's
not 100%.)

If you cannot ping the Server, how is it different? (Being
a Server or being a DC is not really that important to PING,
e.g., having the network operate.)

Can the server ping itself? (If not, then IP didn't initialize.)
Is there a duplicate address?
Is the NIC working?
Is the address of the server correct (watch for TYPOs!!!)?
etc.

Ok...this is getting wierd,it almost acting like token
ring,i go to a client and try to ping the server,"request
time out" 30 min later i can ping it,then 20 mins later i
cant, this is vise versa with the server to,i cant ping the
client then i can 30 mins later, now i have notice where my
cleints are plugged into the router ,the lights are
flashing,no one is on then ,there at the loggon
screen. Also i cant ping address or name so i dont see it
being DNS.I have even rebooted the router and server, now
last night i did something with kerberos i think i was
trying to figure it out,i did a command ksetup /mapuser
username@domain group ,did this screw it up u think? I
might also add the clients for some reason keep getting
that internet gateway everytime they get on the
internetmthere Xp pro clients,i ahve tried to get rid of
it it keeps poping back up any ideas here? but i cant seem
to figure out why this network is acting like this, last
night is was fine. This is the 2003 beta server...

What DNS servers are listed in your IP properties?

Well in the server ,it points to it self and to the router.
the clients point to my server for dns. Also i cant ping
anyone on the internet, but can get to there website, my
clients can ping them though,,,any thoughts?

Ok, messing with Kerberos won't (generally) affect ping.

Messing with IPSec (and Kerberos) would do that.

Not being able to "Ping" the Internet but being able to
reach web sites implies that ICMP (ping's protocol) is
filtered. Perhaps you have some sort of firewall enabled
on the router.

When Ping fails, what does TraceRt (or PathPing) do?

These path tracing programs let you know "how far" the
packets (likely) traveled, as opposed to Ping only saying
"success or failure".

Hi,
This may sound far fetched but I went through such
strange connectivity problems with one of my machines
not being able to ping any other machine and somehow
managing to browse.
I changed my patch chord (Yours may be the
entire network cable) and the rest was...
Try it out incase you are still in trouble
Thanks

GOOD idea -- I always mean to suggest that when
such weird problems occur.

The patch cables are NOTORIOUS for intermittent
problems.
