can't ping my gateway

Pedro

I have a Latitude with W2K Pro running on it. My
Internet connection was working fine, but one night I
left my computer in StandBy mode and when it came back I
started having network problems. The status of the LAN
connection shows packets being sent, but none are
received. I have tried the following:

1. Checking the NIC, my DSL modem, the cable, you name
it... Everything works fine because I have another
computer that connects perfectly.

2. I have tried reinstalling the drivers for the NIC,
reinstalling TCP/IP and using an additional NIC. Same
thing happens when I use the external NIC. XX packets
sent and 0 received.

3. I have tried pinging my modem (192.168.1.1) and it
works fine from the second computer, but not from the
Latitude.

4. I have looked at ipconfig and it shows and
autoconfiguration IP address for the computer.

5. I have reinstalled W2K (not a clean install however)
with no favorable results.

Any ideas? I can only think of Norton AV 2002 which says
it needs to be reinstalled, but I can't see the relation
between that and my LAN connections.

Thanks in advance,

Pedro

Regarding number 3 below, when you say you try pinging the modem, is that a
router ip you are talking about? Or are you connecting directly to the
modem? Have you tried networking just the two computers together with a
crossover cable or hub? Do you have a firewall somehow blocking that
computer? It does sound like a problem with the O/S, maybe try a clean
install - if you have the space, you can do a clean install without
disturbing your original install just for troubleshooting purposes. At
least that way you will know if it's hardware related or not.

First, thanks for your reply. When I say the modem I
mean the DSL modem that was provided to me by the phone
company. It's a ZyXel DSL modem and it's IP address is
192.168.1.1. I can ping this IP from the second computer
and it works fine, but when I take the cable and connect
it to my Latitude's NIC or the external adapter, I can't
reach the host.

I had a firewall on the Latitude but I uninstalled it at
the beginning of my troubleshooting. The second computer
which works fine does have a firewall and this doesn't
seem to cause any problems.

I will follow your advice and do the clean install and
will get back to you on the results.

Thanks again.

When you say that your are getting an autoconfiguration IP, are you getting
an IP like 169.254.x.y ? If so, that is what happens when a DHCP client
cannot reach a DHCP server to get an address. Do you have a router between
the cable modem and the other two machines? Is it a DHCP server? Most
cable modems won't allow more than one machine to get an IP otherwise.
What happens if you configure a static IP address on the Latitude with a IP
on the same subnet as the other machine?
