can't ping any websites??

I can browse the net but can't ping any websites. Why would this happen?

We use an offsite proxy server which simply has a DNS zone in our local DNS
server, pointing to the IP address given to us by the proxy company.

I always thought it was "If you can't PING, you can't do a thing"

DNS forum does not work?

You did not say if you are pinging by name (e.g. www.google.com)
or by IP address (e.g. 216.239.63.104). Knowing the result of
these two tests would tell you plenty!

I always thought it was "If you can't PING, you can't do a thing"

not really. Ping is something like a "low level" contact:

Ping:
You enter a room and say "hello frank".
If frank is in he might reply "hello"

Website:
"Hello frank, how was your weekend"
"pretty good my exchange is up and running"

but maybe frank is only intereted in a real conversation, not in the "hello"

So some servers do not respond to ping. (one day i drives me crazy,
cause i tried to ping the homepage of a big german newspaper and it did
not work. After 30 minutes error serching i tried another host, and it
worked ;)

If you can't ping anything, it might be your firewall, which blocks icmp
(the protocol ping is using).

If you can ping Google's IP address then this means
that your "Default Gateway" setting is correct: Your
machine knows where to send packets to that have
an address that is outside your own subnet address.

If you cannot ping Google by name then this means
that your DNS setting is incorrect. Either it points
at the wrong domain name server, or the domain
name server is unable to resolve the name into an
IP address.

Hope you don't mind but here's our very simple local DNS config on a server
called "NELSON".
Our network domain name is "SCHOOL.LOCAL"
There is a DNS zone called this and this has all the w\station names IPs etc
(not manually entered) are in it.
Our proxy server is "PROXY.ST-JOHNS.SCH.UK"
There is a DNS zone called this and this has a single host entry that points
to the external proxy IP address.
There is a DNS zone called "OSCAR" that points to the IP address of the DC
and DNS server. I have found some iis apps fails to work if that isn't there.
Not complicated is it?

Thanks again 4 any help

Possibly a firewall denying ICMP Ping traffic.

May be configured in the proxy, you'd need to check that with them.
I always thought it was "If you can't PING, you can't do a thing"

Unless soemthing is stopping Ping but not whatever else you want to
do... :)

Bot sure what you're asking, but the DNS newsgroups are alive and
working.

Have a word with the people who set up your DNS and
proxy server. There is obviously something wrong there.
