Can't open word doc

I am using Word 2003. When I use word to write stuff and later save them, I
suddenly can no longer open the files and the message the file (name.doc) is
not available even though I can open it just fine with word pad. This happens
to all of my files - old or newly created.

When I try to close microsoft word, it said "the file Normal.dot already
exists. Do you want to replace the existing file?". Regardless of whether I
click yes or no, I will see a Save As window and the template normal.dot will
appear. Only when I cancel the save as try to close it again will it work
(after saying no again). This happens everytime word opens. Any idea?

I manage to fix the problem by disabling my Norton plugin. However, my Norton
has been there for a while and this problem just happened. Any idea what
caused it?

http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=329820 said that disabling it
increases my exposure to malwares. Is there anyway I can have the office
plugin and the ability to open my file back together. Thanks

Disabling the Office Plug-in does not compromise your security provided you
leave Auto-Protect enabled. Have you recently updated Office or Windows?
ISTR that the plug-in conflict originated with some update or other.
